Touhou Project is a doujin franchise made by a japanese indie developer known as ZUN (who also loves beer). It started in the PC-98 era in 1996 with Touhou: Highly Responsive to Prayers (Reiiden), altho that first entry was more like an Arkanoid-styled game. Upon the release of Story of Eastern Wonderland (Fuumaroku), the game started to head into the shmup genre.

There`s also some spinoffs and doujin games by other people, in which can mostly involve other genres, like fighting, platforming, puzzle, etc.

ZUN`s first game studio was ZUNSoft, and during those times (1996-1998), ZUN worked with Amusement Makers, and after some time, ZUN left Amusement Makers to create Team Shanghai Alice, thus leaving Amusement Makers to create Seihou. ZUN also participated on the music composing and grapic creation of Seihou Shuusou Gyoku and Kyoh Gyoku.
