Team Shanghai Alice
Team Shanghai Alice is a doujin circle with a single permanent member, ZUN, the creator of the Touhou Project series of bullet hell games. ZUN founded Team Shanghai Alice in 2002, after leaving Amusement Makers, a doujin circle consisting of students at the Tokyo Denki University, where ZUN first created the Touhou Project in 1995. Early in the Windows era, Touhou games were released annually, but between Undefined Fantastic Object and Ten Desires ZUN switched to a biennial release schedule for main series games.
In addition to the well known Touhou Project shmups, Team Shanghai Alice has also been involved with the development of several fighting games as spinoffs to the Touhou Project, along with the doujin circle Twilight Frontier, also known as Tasofro.
General Play Style
The gameplay of the Touhou Project was heavily inspired by games created by other developers such as CAVE and Raizing, ZUN having listed DoDonPachi and Battle Garegga as his main inspirations for creating shmups. ZUN has created his own unique style for the games, however. Each Touhou game has its unique scoring system, but there are several mechanics that are staples of the series, such as graze and the various different point item value systems. Touhou games fall under the bullet hell subgenre, consisting of shmups with higher bullet densities and small hitboxes, the series being well known even outside the shmup community as an example of this subgenre.
