A game mechanic that makes time central to the gameplay.

Sine Mora is a great example, where time doubles as the plane’s health. The player is given a certain amount of time to finish a section of the stage. Precious seconds are substracted from the countdown if the player is hit, and added when they kill an enemy or pick up a time item. As that game’s central theme is time-travel, it binds well with the story as well.
