1941: Counter Attack (JP: 1941: カウンターアタック) is a vertically scrolling shoot em' up released by Capcom in 1990. It is the prequel to 1942.

The game recieved a faithful port on the SuperGrafx in 1991.

Gameplay Overview

Controls

1941 is a 2-button shooter. The game ends after all 6 stages are completed.

  • A button: Press: fires the player's main shot/side fighters; Hold: releases the player's charge shot.
  • B button (Press): Activates the Mega Crash.

Items


All weapons have a time limit (maximum 99 seconds).

1941 pow.png POW
Recovers 1 bar of vitality, gives a 50,000 point bonus if the vitality meter is maxed out.
1941 machinegun.png Machine Gun
Low range shot with strong rapid-fire.
1941 missile.png Missile
3-way missiles that travel across terrain.
1941 supershell.png Super Shell
Poor range/fire rate, but has strong piercing properties.
1941 sidefighter.png Side Fighter
Options added to each side of the player's ship; cannot be used with After Image.
1941 afterimage.png After Image
Adds 2 options that follow behind the player's ship; cannot be used with Side Fighter.
1941 yashichi.png Yashichi
Refills the player's vitality meter, gives a 100,000 point bonus if the meter is full.

Vitality Meter


1941's health system is based on bars of Vitality (starts at 3 bars, maximum of 6); using a Mega Crash or getting hit by a enemy removes 1 bar. The game ends when you get hit with no vitality.
