The Bomb mechanic is a common one describing a limited-use weapon, usually one that does large amounts of damage, typically granting some amount of invincibility for use in emergency situations. Bombs are often stored in stocks similarly to lives, though sometimes they operate on a meter or even just a cooldown timer. They will often be replenished each time the player loses a life.
In some shmups, bombs will do no damage but will grant an amount of i-frames, like for example, Zenohell, Zenodyne R, Jet Buster, etc.
Many other shmups have an auto-bomb system, and it can be like these properties: consume all bomb stock, shorter bomb length, etc.
