Suggestion for a definition, based on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbKi60sKwiY (as pointed out by User:Plasmo) and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2jCu-4DVZM (as found by User:Hook)
- auto-scrolling game plane – i.e. the game progresses whether you give inputs or not
- plays in two dimensions (can be rendered in 3D graphics though)
- you control your character in 2D (e.g. not 1D like Space Invaders, nor 3D like StarFox) and can reach all (or at least most) of the screen
- the main weapon does not run out of ammunition
