In some games the ship (or other avatar) can have a module attached to or detached from them during the stage game-play. Typically said module works differently whether it is detached or attached, sometimes even depending on where it is attached.
Typical representations are the iconic Option in R-Type and dismounting the dragons in Dragon Blaze.
(Not to be confused with ship upgrades that can be added or changed between stages.)
