The staple Bee item appears in Black Label. It will flash slowly between green and yellow states. Collecting it while it is yellow will cancel all on-screen bullets into score stars. Collecting it while it is green will fill the Hyper gauge slightly without cancelling bullets. Collecting it while it flashes between the two will give both effects, and the score stars dropped will be large instead of small.

There is a hidden extend at the large generator tower in stage 3 after the midboss. The extend will drop unless it is destroyed by a bomb.

Black Label features a player-controllable rank (known as Red Mode), shown by the meter at the top-right of the screen. For Bomb and Power Style, there are 4 distinct thresholds of the bar that correspond to various ranks:
* Level 1: 0%-33%
* Level 2: 34%-66%
* Level 3: 67%-99%
* Level 4: 100%

For Strong Style, there are 5 distinct thresholds of the bar that correspond to various ranks:
* Level 1: 0%-24%
* Level 2: 25%-49%
* Level 3: 50%-74%
* Level 4: 75%-99%
* Level 5: 100%

The Red Mode gauge is increased by shooting the auto-fire shot and laser at the same time. This gauge will rise at double the rate with a Strong ship or a Power ship in Boost mode. The gauge will gradually decrease otherwise (although it can be slowed by using the laser).

The Hyper Counter gauge is located right above the ship stock on the top-left of the screen. When this fills entirely, you will gain one Hyper Counter stock. Your current stock is indicated either by the number of B/H icons at the bottom of the screen (in Bomb/Strong Styles) or a small ''xN'' to the right of the shot style selection (in Power Style).
Activating a Hyper Counter will drastically power up both the normal shot and laser. The laser can now deflect the large enemy lasers. The normal shot will cancel bullets it hits into score stars. You will gain brief invulnerability while entering and exiting a Hyper, with a timer being displayed around your ship for its duration.
The length of activated Hypers and the associated invincibility are generally shorter than in [[DoDonPachi DaiFukkatsu]], with 1 second of invincibility upon activation (which diminishes to half a second at maximum hyper rank) and 2 seconds of invincibility when exiting a Hyper.

When a Hyper ends, the Red Mode gauge will be drained by 50%, ''unless'' it occurs during a boss' '''WARNING!''' screen. Hypers can be manually canceled by tapping the Hyper button again.

Firing a bomb will cause the Red Mode gauge to briefly max out if it is not already.

=== Chaining and Scoring ===

The current chain value is shown by the amount of ''HIT!''s under the Hyper Counter, and the chain meter is shown to the left of the Hyper gauge.
You don't gain any ''HIT!''s by cancelling enemy bullets with a Hyper; they are only gained by shooting enemies or cancelling bullets by other means, either by bee items or enemies who cancel their own bullets on death. Many enemies in Black Label will cancel their own bullets if killed by autofire+laser.
There are 3 ways to break a chain:
* Using a bomb
* Dying while a Hyper is active
* Letting the chain meter empty while a Hyper is active
Unlike [[DoDonPachi DaiFukkatsu]], dying will not completely deplete the chain value, but it will decrease very quickly until you respawn.
If Autobomb is on, using a Hyper during an autobomb will ''not'' deplete your chain value.

The multiplier system appears to work the same as in [[DoDonPachi DaiFukkatsu]], however, it only takes effect when the Red Mode gauge is flashing red. Based on your current ''HIT!'' count, you will gain a specific multiplier:
* 0 - 499 ''HIT!''s: 1x
* 500 - 999 ''HIT!''s: 2x
* 1000 - 2999 ''HIT!''s: 3x
* 3000 - 4999 ''HIT!''s: 4x
* 5000 - 6999 ''HIT!''s: 5x
* 7000 - 9999 ''HIT!''s: 6x
* 10000 or more ''HIT!''s: 7x
This multiplier is applied to the amount of ''HIT!''s gained from killing an enemy and to the score gained from killing an enemy.

Unlike in [[DoDonPachi DaiFukkatsu]], midboss and boss bullets will not drop stars when cancelled. However, shooting bosses with autofire+laser when at high rank will give a large amount of points, especially while at max rank. Destroying bosses with autofire+laser at max rank will also cause them to drop larger stars which are worth even more score; firing a bomb can help if the Red Mode gauge isn't maxed out, since this will max out the gauge and the ''HIT!'' gauge will not empty until the bomb has finished its animation.
Milking bosses by shooting invincible parts with autofire+laser can give a large amount of points (e.x. blocking your own laser with an enemy laser, the mini robots on the third boss, or the red balls/satellites on the fourth boss), but beware: bosses will fire vicious patterns if milked.

== Routes ==

Entering the Ura route (which features the original DoDonPachi bosses as midbosses and takes slightly different stage routes) has extra requirements in Bomb and Strong Styles:
* No miss
* destroy 3 silos before they get run over by the tanks
** for bomb style, silos must be destroyed while the hit combo multiplier is active (high RED gauge or hyper counter is active)
* have a full hyper gauge and maximum bomb stock when the third silo is destroyed

Power Style will always enter the Ura route in stage 1.

To fight against the various the EX Boss and the two TLBs:
* Taisabachi (or 'Supreme Weapon of Extreme Hellish Annihilation – Golden Disaster'): Do not use more than 2 bombs in the first 5 stages OR kill at least 2 bosses with a full Red Mode gauge.
* Hibachi (or 'Supreme Killing Weapon – Hibachi'): Do not die more than once in the first 5 stages, do not use more than 2 bombs in the first 5 stages, and kill all bosses with a full Red Mode gauge.
* Zatsuza: Must play Strong Style, do not die in the first 5 stages, defeat Taisabachi without dying, do not use more than 2 bombs in the first 5 stages and kill all bosses with a full Red Mode gauge.

'''Always Surrender''' is a vertically scrolling score chasing shoot-em-up developed by [[The Covert Sheep Example]] released, via Steam, for Windows in 2024. The idea in the main modes is to push your luck as far as possible before giving up to bank an ever increasing bonus. It is designed to be a quick game to play, with little down time, and a short ramp up time.

Shooting enemies increases the score, while a bonus score continuously accumulates. Killing an enemy also releases a medal, which increases the multiplier on collection. Medals can be attracted to the player by stopping firing for a short period of time and once the vacuum effect has begun firing does not interrupt it.

The bonus score can be banked by surrendering, setting off a bomb to kill all enemies and ending the game.

A slow-mo system is in place that can be manually activated with a button press, or automically when the option is set to "on" on the main menu. When auto slowmo is on there is a small circle around the player that will activate slowmo when an enemy or enemy bullet enters it. While the game is slowed down the player is invincible, however the amount of time before slow-mo can be used again. This cooldown can be reduced by not using slowmo for a period of time while it is ready to be used.

The player's hitbox is center of the red pixels on the player's ship, and is 1x1 pixel in size.

The game doesn't follow a fixed pattern, however there is a tournament mode setting to fix the randomness if needed. High scores can't be set while tournament mode is on.

Killing an enemy gives a base amount of points: Chase is 1 point, 2 points for Bomb, Charge, and Split, 3 points for Explode, 4 points for Runaway and Beamer is worth 5 points.

The base score is then multiplied by the multiplier and added to the score.

Collecting a medal increases the multiplier by 1 and adds the multiplier value to the score. If the medal is vacuumed the multiplier is snapshotted at the time the vacuum was activated, and this amount is added to the score instead.

The bonus score increases at the rate of the multipler every 6 frames.

In Classic mode there's no bonus score, points are only awarded for killing enemies and collecting medals.

In Expert mode the value of the multipler is added to the score instead of a bonus score to be banked.

In Pacifist mode the score increases by 1 every frame.

== Strategy & Tips ==
Hitting an enemy while in slow mo will kill it, but also hitting enemy bullets will remove them and increase the multiplier. Take advantage of the invincibility time to reposition to a safer area or ram things to increase the multiplier. The player's hitbox is increased during this time to make it easier to hit things.

There's ways of earning extra medals:
* When firing higher than the bottom quarter of the screen, an extra medal will spawn when an enemy is hit.
* Hitting an Explode while it is charging causes 2 extra medals to spawn.
* Hitting a Runaway while it is retreating causes 2 extra medals to spawn.
* Hitting a Beamer while it is firing the laser causes 4 extra medals to spawn.

There is a small window (10f) after being hit where surrendering will still activate.

The slowmo cooldown can be decreased by not activating slowmo while it is ready to be used. The cooldown decreases at a rate of 0.25 seconds for every second that passes, to a minimum cooldown time of 0.5 seconds.

The general plan is to raise the multiplier as high as possible then surrender at the last moment. The total score doesn't account for the kills from the bomb let off when surrendering.

The total score turns green to indicate when surrendering would give a new high score. The score also turns green when a high score has been reached regardless of surrendering.

Aim to last as long as possible before banking the bonus as doing so resets the multiplier.

Try to bank the bonus when there's a lot of enemies on the screen. The bomb set off will generate a lot of medals to begin to rebuild the multiplier.

The enemy spawn rate is doubled during the last 30 seconds.

The first extra life is earned at 10,000 points and the first extra bomb at 25,000. The score needed to earn extra lives and bombs increases by a factor of 10.

Having auto slow off makes it easier to graze bullets and enemies.

There can be only one Chase active at a time. Using slowmo to kill them is a viable tactic so they're not unexpectedly in a way.

Most of the score comes from the kills when surrendering.

== Development History ==
The game was made in Gamemaker Studio.

Development began properly in 2020 but there were really early versions, including a very basic mobile mock up, in 2017.

Originally the main modes also had the zero score for not surrendering, like Expert, however this was quite harsh.

An early pre-release version had the Bomb enemy fire straight down, and also only had the Chase and Charge enemies. It was possible to stay alive forever by simply firing and not moving!

In early pre-release versions the player wasn't invulnerable during the slowmo period, however navigating the slowed bullets was sometimes trickier and often led to more deaths than it prevented.

Pacifist mode once allowed more than one Chase enemy, this was surprisingly a big problem - especially if they were coming from different directions.

The idea in the main modes is to push your luck as far as possible before giving up to bank an ever increasing bonus. Shooting enemies increases the score, while a bonus score continuously accumulates. Killing an enemy also releases a medal, which increases the multiplier on collection. Medals can be attracted to the player by stopping firing for a short period of time and once the vacuum effect has begun firing does not interrupt it.

The bonus score can be banked by surrendering, setting off a bomb to kill all enemies and ending the game.

A slow-mo system is in place that can be manually activated with a button press, or automically when the option is set to "on" on the main menu. When auto slowmo is on there is a small circle around the player that will activate slowmo when an enemy or enemy bullet enters it. While the game is slowed down the player is invincible, however the amount of time before slow-mo can be used again. This cooldown can be reduced by not using slowmo for a period of time while it is ready to be used.

The player's hitbox is center of the red pixels on the player's ship, and is 1x1 pixel in size.

The game doesn't follow a fixed pattern, however there is a tournament mode setting to fix the randomness if needed. High scores can't be set while tournament mode is on.

Killing an enemy gives a base amount of points: Chase is 1 point, 2 points for Bomb, Charge, and Split, 3 points for Explode, 4 points for Runaway and Beamer is worth 5 points.

The base score is then multiplied by the multiplier and added to the score.

Collecting a medal increases the multiplier by 1 and adds the multiplier value to the score. If the medal is vacuumed the multiplier is snapshotted at the time the vacuum was activated, and this amount is added to the score instead.

The bonus score increases at the rate of the multipler every 6 frames.

In Classic mode there's no bonus score, points are only awarded for killing enemies and collecting medals.

In Expert mode the value of the multipler is added to the score instead of a bonus score to be banked.

In Pacifist mode the score increases by 1 every frame.

== Strategy & Tips ==
Hitting an enemy while in slow mo will kill it, but also hitting enemy bullets will remove them and increase the multiplier. Take advantage of the invincibility time to reposition to a safer area or ram things to increase the multiplier. The player's hitbox is increased during this time to make it easier to hit things.

There's ways of earning extra medals:
* When firing higher than the bottom quarter of the screen, an extra medal will spawn when an enemy is hit.
* Hitting an Explode while it is charging causes 2 extra medals to spawn.
* Hitting a Runaway while it is retreating causes 2 extra medals to spawn.
* Hitting a Beamer while it is firing the laser causes 4 extra medals to spawn.

There is a small window (10f) after being hit where surrendering will still activate.

The slowmo cooldown can be decreased by not activating slowmo while it is ready to be used. The cooldown decreases at a rate of 0.25 seconds for every second that passes, to a minimum cooldown time of 0.5 seconds.

The general plan is to raise the multiplier as high as possible then surrender at the last moment. The total score doesn't account for the kills from the bomb let off when surrendering.

The total score turns green to indicate when surrendering would give a new high score. The score also turns green when a high score has been reached regardless of surrendering.

Aim to last as long as possible before banking the bonus as doing so resets the multiplier.

Try to bank the bonus when there's a lot of enemies on the screen. The bomb set off will generate a lot of medals to begin to rebuild the multiplier.

The first extra life is earned at 10,000 points and the first extra bomb at 25,000. The score needed to earn extra lives and bombs increases by a factor of 10.

Having auto slow off makes it easier to graze bullets and enemies.

There can be only one Chase active at a time. Using slowmo to kill them is a viable tactic so they're not unexpectedly in a way.

Most of the score comes from the kills when surrendering.

== Development History ==
The game was made in Gamemaker Studio.

Development began properly in 2020 but there were really early versions, including a very basic mobile mock up, in 2017.

Originally the main modes also had the zero score for not surrendering, like Expert, however this was quite harsh.

An early pre-release version had the Bomb enemy fire straight down, and also only had the Chase and Charge enemies. It was possible to stay alive forever by simply firing and not moving!

In early pre-release versions the player wasn't invulnerable during the slowmo period, however navigating the slowed bullets was sometimes trickier and often led to more deaths than it prevented.

Pacifist mode once allowed more than one Chase enemy, this was surprisingly a big problem - especially if they were coming from different directions.
